What is Body Image?

Body image struggles are all too common, and the journey towards self-love and body acceptance can be difficult. However, it's a journey that's well worth undertaking. 

When most people think about the term “body image,” they associate it with physical appearance, attractiveness, and beauty.   • Research has shown that around 50% of young 13 year old American girls reported being unhappy with their body. This number grew to nearly 80% by the time girls reached 17 years of age. 

  • In more than 50,000 adults, 41% of men thought they were too heavy and were self-conscious about their weight, 16% reported being too uncomfortable in a swimsuit, and 11% thought that they were unattractive.

4. Stop letting the media tell you how to feel about your body

Frequently, the media can be a huge source of fuel for developing and perpetuating a person’s negative body image. It takes time to unlearn or change what social media has taught us to believe. Present-day content is extensively edited and photoshopped, creating distorted ideals. Start practicing the skill of identifying and questioning harmful messages encountered, and make a deliberate attempt to distance yourself from them by limiting your internet usage and screen time. 

5. Surround yourself with positive, loving people

Nurture your relationships with people who love and appreciate who you are – not because you have met certain conditions to be worthy of their approval or love. Choose connections that uplift you rather than reinforce negative feelings. Fostering a network that values and supports you beyond appearances can significantly contribute to your journey toward a more positive self-image.
