Transform Your Eating Habits and Relationship with Food

If you're looking to build a healthier relationship with food and create lasting eating habits, you're in the right place. I'm Carlee, owner of Clarify Wellness with Carlee, a certified nutrition health coach specializing in emotional eating psychology, mindful eating and weight management. My mission is to help you move away from diet culture and toward a balanced, sustainable way of nourishing your body.

Changing your habits doesn’t happen overnight, but small, intentional shifts can make a big difference. Here are my top six tips to help you cultivate a mindful and empowering connection with food.

1. Stop Labeling Foods as “Good” or “Bad”

Food isn’t black and white - every food has a place in a balanced diet. When we label foods as "bad," we create unnecessary guilt and restriction. Instead, try thinking of food in terms of how it makes you feel and what it does for your body. I like to say, “The only bad food is food that tastes bad!”

2. Understand What Each Food Group Does for You

Knowledge is power! Learning how different nutrients support your body helps you make informed choices. For example, carbs are often feared, but they’re actually your body's main source of energy. When you understand their purpose, you're less likely to feel conflicted about including them in your diet.

3. Learn How to Build a Balanced Plate

I like to call this the Clarify Core 4: protein, fat, carbs, and color (fiber). A well-balanced plate stabilizes blood sugar, keeps you full longer, and ensures your body gets what it needs to function optimally. Next time you build a meal, check that you're including each of these components!

4. Practice Mindful Eating

Slowing down and truly experiencing your meals can transform your eating habits. Tune into the flavors, textures, and smells of your food. Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues. Try eating without distractions - yes, that means putting your phone away! The more present you are during meals, the better you'll understand your body's needs.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Self-compassion is key to healing your relationship with food. Nobody eats “perfectly” all the time, and that’s okay! Instead of criticizing yourself, treat yourself with kindness, just as you would a close friend. Journaling can be a powerful tool to help you shift your mindset (more on that below).

6. Seek Support When You Need It

You don’t have to do this alone. Having a support system—whether it's friends, family, or a coach—can provide encouragement and accountability. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out. As a coach, I’m here to guide you and help you heal. If you’re interested in personalized support, I’m offering a 15% discount on my 1:1 coaching program!

Journaling Prompts for a Healthier Mindset

Journaling before, during, and after meals can help you gain insight into your eating habits and emotions. Here are some prompts to try:

Before Eating:

  • How do I feel physically and emotionally?

  • What are my intentions for this meal?

  • What foods will nourish and energize me?

During Eating:

  • Am I eating mindfully and being present?

  • How does this food make me feel?

  • Am I listening to my hunger and fullness cues?

After Eating:

  • How do I feel physically after my meal?

  • Did I enjoy the experience of eating?

  • What did I learn about my body’s cues?
