Navigating the Winter Blues: Understanding Seasonal Changes in Mood

Winter Blues vs. Seasonal Affective Disorder

Experts from the National Institutes of Health acknowledge the winter blues as a common experience marked by heightened feelings of sadness, reduced energy, and a diminished interest in activities typically enjoyed. The winter blues is not a medical diagnosis and is usually gone in a short amount of time. However, seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a clinical diagnosis that is more intense and interferes with daily functioning over a significant period of time. SAD is triggered by the changing of the seasons, typically occurring during the fall and winter months. 


Common symptoms of SAD may include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and/or irritability

  • Social withdrawal

Why do we experience the winter blues?

We experience the winter blues, or SAD, due to factors that are not completely understood. However, it is thought to be connected to changes in sunlight exposure, impacting circadian rhythms and neurotransmitters such as serotonin and melatonin. Vitamin D, essential for serotonin activation and often referred to as the body's "happy chemical," plays a crucial role in mood regulation and contentment. The reduced exposure to natural light during fall and winter may disrupt these biological processes, potentially leading to the development of SAD.
